An intensive manhunt is underway after more than a dozen people were killed in two shootings Wednesday night at a bowling alley and a restaurant in Lewiston, Maine, authorities said. An arrest warrant has been issued for Robert Card, 40, accusing him of murder, according to Maine State Police Col. Williams Ross during a Thursday news conference. Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous. The attack appears to be the deadliest mass shooting of 2023, adding to a grim docket of 565 such incidents reported this year across the United States, with four or more shot excluding the shooter, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The neighbor, Rick Goddard, 44, said he had known the Card family most of his life, because Mr. Goddard lives less than a mile down the road from the Card family house. At the address for the Card family home, no one answered the door on Thursday, and there was only one car parked out front. “We’re on edge right now because we know this is his stomping area,” Mr. Goddard said.

Four college students have died and three others were injured after the SUV they were in crashed early Saturday in the Maine town of Castine, authorities said. Jerry Paul, president of the Maine Maritime Academy, where all seven attended, said in a statement that he's devastated. The four were preliminarily identified as Brian Kenealy, 20, of York, Maine; Chase Fossett, 21, of Gardiner, Maine; Luke Simpson, 22, of Rockport, Mass. All seven were students at the academy, a circa-1941 state school that prepares students for careers in overseas transportation, the Navy, and other ocean-oriented pursuits. Castine, about 35 miles south of Bangor, Maine, has a population of about 1,100 residents, slightly more than the academy's student body.
